COLIN McCAHON: ON THE ROAD – MEET THE ARTISTS

Artists Talk

October 14th 11.00 am

Doors open at 10.00

The artists in this exhibition were asked to submit work in response to McCahon or with reference to faith. Come along and meet some of the artists over a cup of tea or coffee. The following artists will chat about their work and their journey as artists.

(Please note that Artists Nigel Brown, John Laing and Paul Walsh will not be available for this event)

 

Theresa Cashmore That’s my King 2016 – The Nicene Creed 2017 , mixed media on canvas

Calligrapher and artist Cashmore, has a passion for words and like McCahon for passages of scripture. Yet her rendering of words are a complete contrast to McCahon’s hand.

Jessica Crothall On Building Bridges , 2013-2017  oil on canvas

Triptych installation acrylic paint and clear gel medium on three canvases

In this tribute to McCahon’s work by the same name, Jessica references the Christchurch earthquakes and the rebuild of Christchurch.

Gary Silipa    

Of Samoan heritage, Gary has just returned from Buenos Aires where he did an artist residency before embarking on an exciting sojourn around the continent. His two installations in this exhibition are inspired by his recent experiences in South America.

COLIN McCAHON: ON THE ROAD – PANEL DISCUSSION

Panel Discussion

Tuesday, 10th October, 7pm to 9pm.

Our expert panel will share their perspectives of McCahon  in a discussion forum. Panel members:

Dr Zoe Alderton –  a Lecturer  at the University of Sydney, and the author of the book “The Spirit of Colin McCahon”.

Nigel Brown ONZM – one of New Zealands most significant visual artists, Nigel Brown studied under Colin McCahon at the Elam School of Fine Arts.

Peter Crothall – was the founder and Managing Director of the Chrysalis Seed Trust. He completed a Masters thesis on McCahon through the University of Otago’s Dept. of Theology. His topic is on reading the land, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, in works by McCahon.

Rosie Brown – an emergent artist and a millenial speaks about her repsonse as a millenial to McCahon’s art.

Just Som Worship

A Youth Worship series in the Youth Room here at Somervell.

Similar in style to Hunua Easter Camp worship services, this series of evenings will be lead by youth leaders and will include songs, prayer and message.  There will also be supper.

Feel welcome to come along with friends, siblings, cousins etc.  Yr 7 and up.

We hope you will join us for one or all of the series.
