Our History
Somervell Presbyterian Church opened in 1905 on land donated by Mrs Elizabeth Somervell, in memory of her late husband.
The church grew steadily over the next 50 years, with packed morning and evening services in the 1950s and 60s. Some of the families who formed the backbone of the congregation and youth group then are still involved in the life of the church today.
Times changed in the 1970s and 80s, as traditional preaching mixed with nuclear free sermons and new styles of music.
In 2000 we opened our new church building and community centre, which is used by many organisations during the week. You can see photos of the 11 ministers who have served the congregation in the church foyer, next to the photo of Mrs Somervell, who started it all.

The church is located at 497 Remuera Road, cnr Greenlane East Road and Remuera Road, Remuera.
Our nearest motorway access/exit is Greenlane.
Three buses stop within a few minutes walk of Somervell Church - the 75 (Auckland CBD to Glen Innes), the 751 (Newmarket to Panmure) and the 650 (Pt Chevalier to Glen Innes).

Limited to 17 spaces (including 2 disabled spaces at the front of the building). There is plenty of parking in the streets nearby.

Level access to the Church Auditorium, Hall and Foyer from the main door. Access to the Youth Room and Lounge is from the ground floor.
Somervell does not have an internal lift.

There are four unisex toilets on the main floor and one unisex toilet on the downstairs level. These include a disabled toilet on each floor.

You will need a key to access the building if you are meeting outside office hours. Talk to the office staff to make arrangements to pick up the key, which will allow you to enter by both the upper and lower level entrance doors. You will also need to arrange to return the key to the Church Office.

Whiteboards are available on each floor. Please supply your own whiteboard markers.
A sound system operates in the Auditorium. Please talk to the office staff should you wish to use this and to ascertain costs.
Internet access via WiFi.
Portable large TV screen for the rooms on the Main Floor.
Our Building
We have a range of spaces suitable for a variety of purposes available for hire – from a small informal gathering, weddings and funerals, to a large concert and everything in between.
