Sunday Blessings

On the last Sunday of every month Somervell takes part in Sunday Blessings, a mission to provide meals to un-housed people in central Auckland. This involves cooking food and preparing it for distribution in Freyberg Place. We also use rescued food from supermarkets that would otherwise go to waste. You can find out more here.

Somervell church goers making regular donations to Foodbank and serving the community

Foodbank

We make regular donations to the PSN (Presbyterian Support Northern) Foodbank, which has been transitioning from a traditional foodbank to a Communities Feeding Communities model, featuring a Kai Space for emergency food parcels, a pātaka kai (storehouse) community garden, allotment gardens and a food forest.

Somervell’s faithful support enables PSN to provide food boxes and stock the pātaka kai for the ever-increasing number of people from the local community. Food donations can be brought to church on Sunday mornings, or dropped in to the church office during the week. The vision is to create pathways towards food security based on dignity for the local community.

  • Island Child

We give regularly to Island Child, which provides transitional housing to women and children who have nowhere else to live. Over the years Somervell people have donated cleaning products, blankets and bedding, clothing, school supplies and Christmas food treats to Island Child, which is based nearby in Tamaki. You can find out more here.

  • Refugee Migrant Support Group

Our team of five works with NFACT (New Settlers and Family Trust), the Somervell Op Shop and the Food Bank to help refugee families adjust to their new lives in New Zealand. In the past year we have been assisting families from Pakistan, Eritrea, and Afghanistan, living across various Auckland suburbs.

Op Shop

Somervell has a small independent op shop that relies on the work of volunteers – new team members are always welcome. We have supported the community by providing clothing and homeware to refugee families. The op shop is also open on selected evenings to groups who want to have a fun night shopping and chatting together.
